Their origins go all the way back to the seventies and with the last original member vocalist, guitarist and song writer Rock´n`Rolf Kasparek still at the helm the time has come for another album by the German metal group Running Wild. As evident in the cover art that pirate inspiration still plays a role on Rapid Foray, there are eleven tracks including a pleasing instrumental "The Depth Of The Sea – Nautilus", whilst shining brightest and the longest inclusion is "Last Of The Mohicans" which is just over eleven minutes and a very well structured closer. Bolstering the guitar stocks there are extra solos by Peter Jordan and it's the guitars on this album that are the main draw card. Whilst one area that I just don't understand the choice of is the drums, which seem to be once again programmed.
Rock´n`Rolf Kasparek lives up to his name with the classic metal rocker "Black Skies, Red Flag" though it is later surpassed by the rollicking song "Black Bart". There's more traditional styled material on Rapid Foray though not rivaling Running Wild's best songs of the past. Unfortunately I'm just not sold on Rapid Foray it's a mostly safe and familiar kind of album and those drums certainly don't help. I am sure many will undoubtedly disagree as I've read the thoughts of infatuated others whom are positively raving about this here Running Wild recording. Yet aside from the standout tracks "Black Bart" and "Last Of The Mohicans" I just don't experience enough of those warn fuzzies so to speak.
