Charred Walls Of The Damned: Creatures Watching Over The Dead

Anyone who is familiar with his work with Control Denied, Death and Iced Earth amongst others knows that Richard Christy truly is one hell of a talented drummer. Christy is also the primary songwriter and founding member of the metal group Charred Walls Of The Damned, where he is joined by the striking line-up of guitarist/producer Jason Suecof (Capharnaum, Crotchduster), vocalist Tim "Ripper" Owens (Beyond Fear, Ex. Judas Priest ,Iced Earth and Yngwie Malmsteen) and on the bass there is Steve Digiorgio (Testament, Death). Charred Walls Of The Damned now have recorded their third potent metal album Creatures Watching Over The Dead.

Creatures Watching Over The Dead appears some five years after the last Charred Walls Of The Damned album Cold Winds On Timeless Days. Where this accomplished quartet unleashed their lethal mix of various metal influences with power/thrash and progressive metal elements as Christy's kick pedals were working overtime on roaring tracks like "Zerospan" as he brought the hammer down with so much power, speed and precision. Now they are back to do so again, and as with their prior albums Charred Walls Of The Damned are not your straight forward kind of metal band, they are quite technical teasing you with some of the coolest riffs only to promptly divert into something else, though not so much with this new album as I found myself drawn to songs in a shorter period. Owens' doesn't disappoint his wide ranging vocals on all three albums are that of someone who give his all, delivering in spades and he is so suited to the material. Creatures Watching Over The Dead is a fantastic metal album with cracking metal tracks like "The Soulless" which has one of Creatures Watching Over The Dead catchiest choruses and spirited performances all round.

Charred Walls Of The Damned are onto another winner here, and with that engaging combination in styles there is so much variety to ensure that Creatures Watching Over The Dead stays in regular rotation.

Charred Walls Of The Damned: Creatures Watching Over The Dead

My Score:

Once again, the combination of Tim 'Ripper' Owens, Richard Christy, Jason Suecof, and Steve Digiorgio, otherwise known as Charred Walls of the Damned, have managed to produce an enjoyable platter of pure heavy metal, their third, and titled Creatures Watching Over the Dead. Due to the million projects each member of the band are involved in, it's taken five years to put this one together, but the wait was well worth it as the band crank out one crushing tune after another here that combines thrash, progressive metal, and power metal for one hell of a ride. Highlights are many, but with just nine tracks Creatures Watching Over the Dead kicks plenty of ass and doesn't overstay its welcome, with tunes like "The Soulless", "As I Catch My Breath", "Tear Me Down" and the rampaging opener "My Eyes" just delivering all the metal good with plenty of power and class. Owens has long been one of the most underrated vocalists in the genre, and his soaring pipes are on full display throughout the album, further cementing his reputation as one of THE go to metal singers. The rest of the band of course also put in spirited performances, with Christy's acrobatic drumming another reason why this band is so notable.

In short, Charred Walls of the Damned are a heavy metal supergroup that lives up to the billing, and Creatures Watching Over the Dead is another example of why. Check it out.
