Richards|Crane: Richards|Crane

Whitfield Crane of Ugly Kid Joe and Godsmack, Dropbox guitarist Lee Richards have joined forces before under the name Another Animal, so to see them come together as the more simply named Richards|Crane isn't too much of a surprise. What might be however is the stripped back acoustic nature of their self titled debut. With assistance from a couple of other Ugly Kidders, Dave Fortman (guitars and he helps the main pair on production) and Shannon Larkin (drums), as well as bassist Jimmy Preziosa, the focus here is on expertly arranged, easy going tracks that still hold depth and character. The combination of the two main players' voices is also key, the tuneful, if intentionally droning nature, especially when combined to acoustic bass, reminiscent of the acoustic grunge of Days Of The New.

It's all very grown up stuff, the slight hint of adult Americana sitting behind a collection of songs that hit hardest through their subtlety. Edward Newton adds strings to the mix, allowing the likes of "World Stand Still" and "Rainy Day" to possess a gravitas that may have otherwise not come through. Although a cracking, if laid back twin guitar solo in both doesn't hurt either. "Black & White" was this album's lead single and with Alter Bridge/Slash frontman Myles Kennedy lending his vocal talents, it's easy to hear why it's made the impact it has. Although the pensive "Someday" and memorable, easy strum of "Waiting On A Prayer" aren't too far behind.

Interestingly however, this album's main strength – the laid back, easy vibe – also proves its achilles heel. For while the heartfelt tracks are crafted and honed, their very nature also means that they too often float by without quite hitting their intended mark and can, on occasion, become background music. However, if you're looking for an acoustic album to while away an afternoon, without challenging your senses too much, while still impressing through the love and care lavished on it, Richards|Crane wouldn't be a bad place to start.
