Lonewolf: The Heathen Dawn

The Heathen Dawn is eighth album by Grenoble's Lonewolf from Grenoble. It was produced by the band, recorded by Xavier Sindt at Microclimat Studio, Grenoble, France. Mixing and mastering was done by Charles Greywolf (Powerwolf) at Studio Greywolf, Holz, Germany, and Powerwolf are as good as any band to make comparisons with in terms of the overall sound. Not quite as epic as their German counterparts nor as thematically consistent but definitely as punchy and powerful. It is entirely possible that Lonewolf have made their best album a long way into their career. Another reference point would be Grave Digger especially in the vocal department.

The absolute best thing about Lonewolf is the twin guitar attack of vocalist Jens Borner (probably not the best singer in the world though but not without gruff charm) and Michael Hellstrom and each and every track is a guitar-based joy. The key word to describe Lonewolf is, "galloping," in the same way that until recently Iron maiden galloped because of the rhythm section. "Keeper of the Underworld" and "When the Angels Fall" are the standout tracks because they have the best combination of melody and twin-guitar attack but this is a more than solid slab of fun European metal.
