Siegel, Naomi Moon: Shoebox View

Naomi Moon Siegel is a Seattle musician specializing in the trombone. She used crowd funding to help support her latest endeavor titled Shoebox View. In the liner notes she says she didn't want to create a "virtuosic jazz album" but went for a more organic and tasteful sound. I have to admit she has met her intentions and then some. This is a wonderful album consisting of ten folky jazz tracks. She also has an excellent backing band to help realize her sound.

It cannot be stated enough, this is not an album that will wow you with mind bending musicianship. It is very tasteful and restrained with composition and the artistry of playing together as a band being the focal points. Although Siegel adds piano, keyboards and ukulele on a few tracks, it is her warm toned saxophone that is the real star of the show. She is a natural player, easing gentle long drawn notes and organic sounding textures.

Some tracks are more overtly folk than others, like the gentle guitar and ukulele strums in "Ukelady" and the serene guitar and banjo in the breezy "Punta Uva". Wurlitzer also helps to fill in the spaces and of course the trombone is ever present.

This is really quite a nice release, easy to listen to with an understated easy going atmosphere that should sit well with many fans of folk and jazz. Released on Break Open Records.
