Acid Brains: Thirty Three

Nearly twenty years into their career and Italian punkin' grungsters Acid Brains are determined to give you the best of both worlds. Five songs confidently belted out in English pave the way for a further four in their mother tongue. Billed as Part 1 and (you'll never guess…) Part 2, the two sides compliment each other perfectly, bouncing from the garagy shoegaze of "Halloween" to the threatening power-punk meets The Hives of "Sometimes", where grating guitars meet their match in the shape of hollered vocals and stop start drum breaks.

"Tu" kicks in the Italian half with an almost flamenco rhythm playing out under darting, daring riffs, while "Mi Sorpendi" seems to drill down into the brain and sow its seeds of anarchy deep within. Add in "All'infinito" and its atmospheric gargling jingle jangle yelp, and "Solido" which appears to have been recorded inside the innards of an angry piano (OK, probably not…) before providing the chant-it-out release the album has been waiting for and I'd actually suggest that it's this latter half that plays out stronger. That said if Acid Brains had cooked up nine crazy tracks like "Make Up Your Mind" and "On The Borderline", I would still be pulling on my cracked leather jacket and Doc Marten boots ready to stomp out the beat.

Are you ready? Are you prepared? Yes, it's time for this lot to turn you brains to acid. Don't worry, you'll like it, even if you only understand half of it.
