From Horror Pain Gore Death Productions comes the debut album from the Virginia blackened sludge/doom foursome known as Beldam, titled Still the Wretched Linger. Seven tracks dripping with massive distortion, pulverizing drum work, and lethal, black metal styled rasps & screams. Whether it's the mid-paced pummeling of "Salamander", complete with haunting feedback and evil vocals, to the more sedate, funeral doom laden menace of "Her Unbearing Abyss", these guys go for the jugular and take no prisoners. The great thing about Still the Wretched Linger though is the ample amount of variety on display; this is no normal sludge affair where each track sinks deeper and deeper into the abyss, instead Beldam offer up some uptempo pieces like "Needles" to sit alongside the grueling sludge of a track like "Beauty's Martyr", the latter an interesting piece that starts off like some sort of NWOBHM offspring before diving headfirst into massive, coma induced fuzz complete with gravelly croaks out of the bowels of hell.
Still the Wretched Linger won't be for everyone, but those with a hankering for some massive sludge & doom sprinkled with a taste of black metal, this one comes with an easy recommendation. Oh yeah, and some evil artwork & photography in the CD booklet is another plus!
