Phantom 5: Phantom 5

Phantom 5 began life when Michael Voss (Casanova, Bonfire, Mad Max) and Claus Lessmann (Bonfire) decided to approach the Frontiers label about making a new record together. In a massive surprise – because this is never the case at Frontiers - Frontiers' President Serafino Perugino loved the idea and suggested the guys should go ahead and involve some of the talented musicians that composed the Melodic Hard Rock scene in Germany between the end of the 90's and early 00's. In came Robby Boebel (from Frontline) and Axel Kruse (from Jaded Heart) then ex-Scorpions bassist Francis Buchholz came on board and Phantom 5 were ready to go.

According to Michael Voss: "For me it sounds like we did a follow up to the famous Bonfire Fireworks album with a touch of Frontline meets Jaded Heart groove… it is a driving monster with huge walls of guitars, powerful soaking drums and fine catchy melodies…we took a trip back into the world of the eighties!" he's not wrong – the album reeks of the 80s from the opening riff of "All The Way" – with its slightly worrying isn't-it-difficult-being-a-man lyric until the last note of "Why" (on the standard version.) Phantom 5 have come up with a deeply unfashionable album given that the focus is on melody, concise choruses and tight solos. Once upon a time, a debut album of such undoubted quality would have set the band up as one of the next big things. Given the ages of the protagonists this obviously won't be the case here but I can't stop listening to "Someday" and the Phantom 5 (the band and the album) are much better than I had hoped for.
