Songevity: Safe in Sound

Rob Duguay is a jazz bassist residing in Queens, Ney York. The young musician leads the Rob Duguay Quartet and Trio, the Low Key Trio and Songevity. Rounding out the trio is Israeli native Nadav Snir-Zelniker (drums) and Justin Kauflin (piano). Safe in Sound was recorded in 2014 but wasn't released until June of this year.

Safe in Sound is melodic trio jazz that is easy to listen not so much because the music isn't complex, because it is, it really has to do with the fact these guys are great musicians, especially when you consider their relatively young age.

"Skipping Rocks" begins with vibrant drums played with energetic enthusiasm giving way to melodic piano chords and fluid bass. The drums slow down allowing the piano to take center stage. The piano carries the melody while the rhythm section offers a good dose of complexity. The three instruments interact in a seamless and wonderful way ending with an excellent drum solo. "Blue Because Of You" starts with gently plucked bass, wisps of cymbals and softly struck piano with an overall feeling of romanticism. The pretty balladic beginning leads to a more forceful drum sound where the playing isn't quite as soft. One of the band's strong points is their ability to play with an equal amount of fervor and restraint, making the transitions as seamless as possible. The uplifting and spry "Peace To Geese (On The Fly)" features excellent piano runs and a rock solid rhythm section. Bass and piano solos highlight the joyous "Sweat And Toil Pie", another fine slice of contemporary jazz.

Modern jazz with just the right amount of nostalgic sentimentality makes Safe in Sound a sure fire winner and a must have in any jazz collection. A GSI Records release.
