Nearly twenty-five years into their career and with this, their twelfth album, Jaded Heart's current line-up of Johan Fahlberg – vocals, Peter Östros – guitars, new boy Masahiro Eto – guitars, bassist Michael Müller and second newbie Bodo Stricker – drums have made what can only be described as…a Jaded Heart album! Like other hard rocking European melodic metal acts such as Pink Cream 69 or Denmark's Pretty Maids, Jaded Heart make no concessions to popular trends and ply their trade with utter conviction.
The first half of the record up to the muscular "Rescue Me" is arguably as good as any era of the band propelled by feisty guitars and strong vocals and as such it's a bit of a shame that things fall away starting with the heavy if slightly directionless "Salvation". There is quite a bit of filler in the second half of Guilty by Design but the first five tunes are excellent and show that there is definitely life left in this particular hound yet.
