Pearly Clouds is a new project and includes Gary Lucas (guitars, effects), Enikő Szabó (vocals) and Tóni Dezső (alto and baritone saxophone). I have not heard of Szabó or Dezső but Lucas is a familiar name to me having played with The Magic Band, Jeff Buckley and Peter Hammill.
The music here is really quite somber, I suppose Hungarian folk music isn't meant for parties. That my friends is an understatement. The playing is really quite beautiful, especially the acoustic guitar. Lucas's flutterings, delicate picking and ethnic chords are all over this disc but that isn't enough for me to return to this very often. The vocals of Szabó are okay but I would have preferred lyrics in English so as to better understand the root of these songs.
I can't find fault with these musicians or the songs, it is just not to my personal taste, although I do quite like the music in "Q and A" and "Wayfarer" as the melodies are more up lifting and the saxophone quite rich and textural. Bottom line: if Eastern European folk music suits your fancy I can imagine Pearly Clouds finding a place in your collection.
