Daversa, John: Kaleidoscope Eyes – Music of The Beatles

The burning question is do we really need another album that covers The Beatles, after all the originals all sound pretty fine to me. That said, I was willing to give this one a chance to hear just where these new arrangements would take me.

The album is called Kaleidoscope Eyes and the artist is John Daversa, a name that has escaped me until now. It does help that Daversa is a world renowned trumpet player so he certainly has the pedigree to pull something like this off. The classic "Good Day Sunshine" begins the disc and an excellent tenor sax solo quickly ensues before blasts of trumpet lead into a recognizable arrangement. Some neat tempo changes and the brass ensemble really play their collective hearts out. "And I Love Her" is calm and beautiful highlighted by Daversa's sensitive trumpet work whereas "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" starts very quietly before the trumpet and full band play with gusto and verve settling into some dynamic rhythms and gently swinging between pastoral and more upbeat and grand soundscapes. It really is a cinematic tour d force with a carnival like atmosphere near the end and some ripping guitar solos to boot. Another highlight has to be their cover of Harrison's "Here Comes The Sun", quite a grandiose ride to be sure with outstanding sax, trumpet and clarinet.

What's cool about Kaleidoscope Eyes is the band gives these tunes the full treatment while still incorporating some of the things that made these songs great in the first place. Who would of thought Big Band Beatles music would sound this good.
