Meron, Daniel: Sky Begins

Born in Israel and now based out of Brooklyn, NY, Daniel Meron is a supremely talented jazz pianist. Six years ago he released his debut album Directions and now is back with his latest endeavor Sky Begins. The rest of the quartet features Meron's wife Maia Karo (voice), Noam Wiesenberg (bass) and Jimmy MacBride (drums).

Sky Begins is a nice piano led jazz album with each song featuring Meron's clear and concise piano motifs. He is an excellent player with an ear for melody and solid arrangements. Each tune is melodically tuneful as Meron's piano shifts between Karo's jazzy vocals and MacBride's tasty drum work, which is particularly impressive in the vibrant and rollicking "Fish In The Air". On the jaunty "Sleepless Nights" Karo's vocals have a slight romantic tinge and the piano is crystal clear and clean. Meron knows exactly where each song is heading, he is clearly a musician of innate quality. In "Notes From A Journey" the playing ramps up as the song develops whereas "Like Water" is a more serene and dreamy offering. The album contains two solo piano instrumentals; the melancholic "Secret Room" and the slowly evolving "Water Ends" which seeks a deliberately slow and relaxing pace.

I found Sky Begins to be a relaxing and enjoyable listen. It can and should be a totally immersive experience for anyone who digs piano and jazz. Released on Rabit Rabit Rabit Records.
