Pedersen, Roger: Guitar Madness…and other nice songs
Often shred fest albums fall short in the melodic category but that isn't the case with Roger Pedersen's Guitar Madness…and other nice songs. Besides acoustic and electric guitars Pedersen also adds bass and keyboards. Joining him are Todd Sorensen (drums) and Johannes Stole who guests on one track adding vocals and keyboards.
Right from the opening track "Classic Maniac", the melodies are certainly prevalent. The shredding and rhythmic play is equally catchy and there is an off the wall quirkiness at play as well. "Sweep Sheep" is a more bombastic affair with swirling guitar pyrotechnics and choppy rhythms. There is no doubting Pedersen's skill on electric guitar but he is equally adept on the acoustic, beginning with the fabulous "Leftovers". His playing on this one is really quite remarkable as his guitar adds a bit of Spanish flair. On "Sicko" the electric is back with a vengeance only to return to calming acoustic pastures with the pretty "Just Over Those Hills". The sweeping guitar acrobatics in the melodic "Tribute" is another album highlight.
Whether its acoustic or electric, Pedersen's virtuosity is on full display throughout Guitar Madness. Recommended for aspiring guitarists everywhere.
