Rhin: Passenger

It's refreshing to read that this album was recorded on one day (sometime in October 2015) and was basically captured in just one take. Even if there was some studio tweaking here and there, the idea of a band recording an album like this under such straightforward circumstances is impressive. Skeptics might say that recording things in a single take is basically impossible; they might also challenge the band's songwriting skills on the grounds that something one can record so quickly isn't all that complex or sophisticated. Worse, our skeptics might continue, it's all just a bid to seem authentic in a music scene populated by fakers.

My response to these possible objections is simple: forget all those questions just listen to this album. Rhin plays music that has a kinship to punk rock but also blends into the mix strong elements of noise and stoner metal. The result is a playful but punishing set of songs that are mostly enjoyable and always interesting. This band has mastered the opening hook in ways that make other bands jealous. Check out the openings to "Bad Timing" and "Unwell" for strong examples. These guys have a knack for throwing listeners right into things without unnecessary build up or drama. Listening to Rhin is like discovering an exciting new band, the one you'll never shut up about. Listen to "Clay," "Basement," and "Uncle Tuck" on this one.
