Niya: Head Held High

Nyia's debut CD is for extreme metal fans only – and no Proggies need apply.

The original 'Nyia' was a demon, the underworld god of dead people's souls. This Nyia was formed by former members of Vader, Kobong, Prophecy and Yattering, and was supposed to be something of a supergroup. What we have, in fact, is absolutely standard death metal with the application of several technical ingredients, leading the extreme metal set to call this 'progressive'. Well – there are some interestingly dissonant chords, odd time measures, inspired drumming with an occasionally quirky off-beat, and some wildly chaotic moments. But these elements cower beneath an all-out dual-distorted-guitar attack with aggressively heavy and mind-numbingly monotonous growls, punctuated by rare moments of softer stuff and a few lines of clean vocals that oddly enough seem out of place here.

Production is disguised by the muddy power chords that even drown the cymbals – which are usually a reliable medium for hiding imperfections. The 12 songs on the CD last just shy of 25 minutes, running from 1:08 to a 4:43 epic.

The sampler we received had no lyrics, but this is extreme stuff, and with song titles like "Pails Of Blood" and "Over The Ceasless Dying", it's safe to assume you won't be playing this for the kiddies at your next Sunday School class.
