Ribeye Brothers, The : If I Had A Horse...

I'd give you the full title of this latest offering from the good folks at Meteor City, but that would be promoting bestiality, and -- what the hey, right; the full title is "If I Had A Horse, I'd Buy It Oats And F**k It." Well, the relationship between a man and his horse is a sacred one-- just ask drummer Jon Kleiman of Monster Magnet, who co-designed this monstrosity with a guy named Tim Cronin ex-Magnet, current lighting whiz). The Ribeye Brothers concept reminds me of the X one-off side project The Knitters, only further devolved and mutated on dangerous drugs. "Horse" features not one but two versions of a piece of honkytonk insanity titled "Mister Ray Charles" with wheezing Farfisa organ straight outta Ray Manzarek; the second time around it's slowed considerably just in case you missed the witty lyrics. George W. might appreciate the sentiment of "D.W.I.," and even noise kids will like some of the sheer sonic noodling spiked into the mix from time to time. In case this psychobilly ramble wasn't eclectic enough to suit even the totally fragmented in spirit, there's even a Ringo Starr cover ("Don't Pass Me By") revamped as a hoedown..."Horse" is a pretty weird animal, like the two-headed critter on the cover, and about as fun a party record to come down the shute as anything since Zappa's Sheik Yerbouti (and a stop-gap while we wait for the side project Inverted Northern Moon Forest, or whatever Seth of A.C. was calling it). Anyway, I'd sure recommend this even to non-Monster Magnet completists.
