Bent Knee is a new name to me and when I initially saw that they were signed by Cuneiform Records I was ready for a little bit of jazz which turns out not to be the case. The press release says that, "Bent Knee is a band without frontiers. The Boston-based group seamlessly connects the worlds of rock, pop and the avant-garde into its own self-defining statement…its rock for the thinking person. The group's lyrics are dark and infused with themes focusing on the emergence of personal demons, unwanted situations and the difficulty of conquering them. Its mercurial sound matches its subject matter. It's a thrilling aural roller-coaster ride…"
Initially I was going to disagree fairly violently but repeated listeners have revealed that Say So is a multi- layered, textured piece of work which, other than "Eve" (and I really can't stand this one) is a genuinely progressive, impressive album. Led by vocalist and keyboardist Courtney Swain's unique, at times pleading, at times hectoring voice Say So is the perfect antidote to the saccharine Disney-hewn mainstream girlie-girls so popular in today's mainstream.
