Dead Behind The Scenes: White EP

Having previously operated as the The Scream, this young Italian five-piece return under the name Dead Behind The Scenes. Hailing from Milan, their White EP debut is meant to convey the monotony of living in a fog filled concrete jungle. Unfortunately it reaches its aims all too well, none of the five tracks presented here the sort of place you'd like to spend much time.

"I Love Matt" sets the scene, a plastic Talking Heads sound delivered without any of the verve or bite required to make an impact. Vocalist Dave Bosetti is placed front and centre, his performance dominating what at times can be some decent keyboard lines from Lorenzo Di Blasi – if DBTS have a strong point it's definitely Di Blasi. As for Bosetti, well, as a singer he makes an average guitarist, neither aspect delivered well, meaning what you're left with is limp riffs and vocals that lack for character, clarity or, well anything really.

"Bulletproof Soulmate" is the sort of faux ska Lilly Allen would knock out in her fag break, while "No Name Song" starts like an intimate take on early The Police, before utterly terrible 'woahs' and 'heys' suck any life out of proceedings. The awfully named "Sex Rock & Rock 'n Roll" again features some wonderful keyboards, a Stranglers atmosphere wasted on japing punky riffs and shouts that struggle to be taken seriously, while the closing swearfest "Sometimes You Just Have To..." is a song title that should surely be finished by the words "...turn this nonsense off?".

At the risk of sounding harsh, keyboard player Lorenzo Di Blasi really should be on the look out for a band more capable of utilising his undoubted skills. As for Dead Behind The Scenes? Unfortunately they are very aptly named indeed...
