Future Figment: Qualm

Iceland's Future Figment have released their debut album, Qualm, and this Prog Metal band has ventured forth with their combination of Tool's sludgy greatness and Amorphis' brooding and dank power to create a dark alternative to their heaviness.

Tracks like "Dementia", "At the Ocean's Edge" or "Crown the Sun" all bleed at a mid tempo pace, which allows Future Figment the breath to sculpt their particular brand of heavy. Allowing the influence of Tool to wash over them, while never quite sounding like them, is a feat all unto itself. A Nordic vibe with a brooding attitude is all over Qualm with a landscape that is created to tell its story over the angular and alternative themed riffage that is delivered with a Prog heaviness.

Qualm is definitely a record that needs to be spun a few times to get inside of what is happening, it is a deep album for sure. A vast Prog expression with a leaning towards the darker values that finds itself rather intriguing. If you like bands like the previously mentioned Tool, Amorphis or Katatonia then give Future Figment a try. Qualm is not an easy first listen, as it is a distant or broad record to get into at first. With that said, this is not a record that I would be playing on my own very often, but it is interesting at least.
