Poley, Ted: Beyond the Fade

2016 is a bit of a bumper year for fans of Danger Danger what with the recent excellent release by The Defiants and this, another fine solo collection from Ted Poley. In a less than massive shock Frontiers (yep, surprise) teamed Poley with some of their key talent such as the brothers Tom and James Martin (Vega) and the seemingly never-out-of-the-recording-studio Alessandro Del Vecchio who also contributes drums, keyboards and backing vocals.

Given the names involved it is quite easy to correctly predict what Beyond the Fade will be like. If you were thinking buoyant, upbeat, breezy melodic rock then award yourselves full marks. The first half of the album definitely fits that description whereas possibly the tone of the second half is a tad darker but still highly melodic. The wonderful "Stars" is my second favorite Poley effort since "What if She Knew" and would have fitted quite comfortably on Journey's massively underrated Arrival album which is a definite recommendation. The even better "Higher" makes the middle of the record particularly strong. If you don't love this superior piece of melodic rock then you should be damned to spend eternity listening to Justin Bieber.
