Carlsson, Patrik: Phraseology

Patrick Carlsson knows how to tear up the fretboard, how to craft a melody and how to craft a tune. The only thing that the slinger hasn't completely learned how to do is completely shed the chains of influence. Fine as Phraseology is (and it's a monster record in the realm of guitar-based music), it often owes a little too much to Joe Satriani circa Flying In A Blue Dream, Steve Morse and even a little bit of Sir Yngwie. That said, tracks such as "Exptoc Bossa ," which is a Santana-esque detour, "Still Believe," which features a country-esque turn from this talented Swede, and the obligatory ballad, "Supernova," make you sit up and take notice of this hot young slinger's individual talents. I'm putting down in my files as one to watch in the coming years, starting right now.
