If These Trees Could Talk: The Bones of a Dying World

Akron, Ohio instrumental quintet If These Trees Could Talk recently signed a deal with Metal Blade Records, and their debut for the label (and third overall) is titled The Bones of a Dying World. Classifying themselves as 'post-whatever' is actually hilarious but also quite indicative, as parts of their music certainly falls into what we would normally call post-rock or post-metal, but either tag somehow doesn't do these guys justice. Opening cut "Solstice" pulls you right in with some lilting guitar chords, jagged shards of lead dissonance, and the occasional thunderous riffs, while "Swallowing Teeth" has a dreamy, floating feel that's not far from vintage prog or space rock. "Earth Crawler" contains some magnificent guitar explorations that pack some hefty drama, but the creeping atmosphere in spots also helps set the mood on this enjoyable track. That's kind of the pacing of the whole album, this blending of light & shade, of fury & tranquility, which constantly keeps the listener on their toes. Sure, you can sit back and let the gorgeous sounds of "The Here and Hereafter" seep into you very soul, but then the band lurch back with the ominous and at times quite menacing "Iron Glacier" for a totally different experience.

The Bones of a Dying World won't be for everyone; it's a fairly lengthy album, and for some the more sedate moments (and there are many) might get a little tiresome, but once you settle in on the actual beauty that can be discovered throughout, you'll find plenty of rewards. A very solid Metal Blade debut for If These Trees Could Talk.
