Celestial Ruin: Pandora (EP)

Female-fronted symphonic rock? Let's send it to Simon as that is his bag. I'm confident that is why I was sent this one. Celestial Ruin are a new name to me so let's see what we are told about them in the press release shall we? "Canadian band Celestial Ruin is styled after European Symphonic Rock/Metal but executed with a decidedly North American flavour. Combining a heavenly destruction of heavy riffs with beautiful melodies, Celestial Ruin create catchy, singable melodies, and rich symphonic textures. The compositions are "epic" by all accounts. Lyrical themes are mainly drawn from fantasy and horror, sometimes implying deeper meanings, sometimes just celebrating the subject matter." Just like Nightwish then one might opine lazily but correctly. Actually Celestial Ruin probably have more in common with early Within Temptation than early Nightwish as I always thought that Nightwish were always a little generic and underwhelming.

Pandora is a more than solid EP and does exactly what it should – namely whet the appetite for a full length album in a similar vein. There appears to be a theme of being trapped in difficult circumstances flowing throughout the EP and many of the lyrics were written at a time when lead singer Larissa dawn was incapacitated by illness. Former After Forever man Joost Van Den Broek gives the band a fine production polish on this self-released EP which should see them snapped up by a larger record company which should hopefully give them a big push as there is much promise here.
