Crematory: Monument

There's always been something vaguely risible and mirth-making about Germany's Crematory probably because of their unconventional looks – I mean come on, check out those mutton chops and the po-faced expressions in most of their photos. The video for "Ravens Calling" screams, 'First year Media Studies' video whilst Katrin Jüllich, the keyboard player in particular looks like she has a million different ways to kill a man! They do however, have a nice line in merchandise which appears to be modeled on the German football team kit and in Monument they have an excellent new and thirteenth (!) album.

Steamhammer/SPV describe Monument with some adequacy as,"a gothic metal opus that positively bursts with energy, featuring twelve diverse numbers with different degrees of toughness, including double guitar parts and guitar solos." OK that might be a little descriptive toward the end of the sentence but Monument mixes German and English lyrics alongside clean and growled singing as well as a big bouncing sound powered by Harald Heine's bass which underpins everything nicely especially the not-at-all-like-Rammstein "Die letzte Schlacht". "Die So Soon" has a poppy keyboard riff that worms its way into the earlobes and won't go away and is probably the pick of a very good album.
