Sinnery: A Feast of Fools

Sinnery is a modern thrash band from Israel. The guys started playing together in the teens and are only now entering into their 20s. This album, the band's first full-length album shows off a band full of hunger and energy. The music, at its best, thrashes hard and shows off a commitment to making music that is hard and intense. Check out the way the band struts its stuff on "Built to Kill." Other highlights include "Holy Grounds" and "Mad Dog." I also enjoyed the title track, even though it took some unnecessary chances and was a tad too long.

Things shift sonically a bit on tracks like "Black Widow" and "A Feast of Fools." The former has a short symphonic opening that quickly turns into a brutal thrasher. The latter did a little more with its symphonic elements by having them playing behind the vocals at the beginning. It was interesting, but distracting. I think the band wants to demonstrate a willingness to take chances, but I think things could have stayed closer to the thrash sound that lies at the heart of this album. Besides, the band shows some nice Iron Maiden-style playing in the second half of "A Feast of Fools." There's substance here without getting out every tool in the box. No matter these quibbles, there's enough potential here to suggest Sinnery is a band to watch.

The cover art by Costin Chioreanu (Arch Enemy, Opeth, My Dying Bride, and others) is pretty cool. It appears to be an occult variation on the Mad Hatter and his uncanny tea party. I don't see Alice among the group but each participant is drawn in nice detail. I especially like the eye on the palm of one of the creatures.
