Shepherd: The Coldest Day
As a huge fan of doom metal, stoner rock, pretty much anything slow and sludgy that involves low-grade ditch weed, bell bottoms and Boone's Farm, this seemed like a must-love kinda record from everything I'd read about it. There are seven songs named after each day of the week, plus a closing epic track named "Doomsday," which is kind of a cool idea. Then there's a guest appearance from Scott "Wino" Weinrich and the fact that this is doom––all of that should have, in my estimation, scorched the racing stripes right outta my Fruitofdalooms. But it didn't. Much of the album sounds cold, terminally dispassionate, forced and, above all, tired. The writing's kinda there, kinda sharp but not often enough to make you stand back and say, "Whoa!" At times I felt like one of those poor sods in the movie The Serpent and the Rainbow––you know, they've been anesthetized but everyone thinks that they're dead, so they're buried and then they're dug up and they're all freaked out and zombie like? Kinda like that. Like you're in pain, all kinds of weird things are going on around ya but you can't do nothing to stop it. Too bad. I was so looking forward to loving this album. Great cover art, though.
