Denmark's Helhorse have now been around for ten years through various line-up configurations and band names, but they are here to show the world that they are force to be reckoned with the release of their third album, and first for SpineFarm Records, simply titled Helhorse. With influences that seem to draw from Black Sabbath, Crowbar, Down, Orange Goblin, Black Stone Cherry, Alice in Chains, EYEHATEGOD, Baroness, High on Fire, and Corrosion oF Conformity, the band have a certain stoner/doom/hardcore thing going on that mixes with some emotional, bluesy vocal styles for a pretty accessible listening experience. "Carry Your Own" and "Among the Wolves" hit hard with no shortage of massive riffs and plenty of attitude, while the more somber "Fortune Favours the Bold" is like a strange mix of old Pearl Jam with the more recent output of Down and Black Stone Cherry. "The Blood Boiler" and "Raise the Black Flag" both have a ton of groove but are more in the hardcore/punk vein, yet "Haven Hell" and "Hell of Ride" mix swampy Southern Rock with raunchy stoner riffs. Closer "No Fucks Given" king of blends all of this together, with screaming vocals, booming grooves & breakdowns, and crushing riffs all fighting for supremacy.
Some good material here on Helhorse, and though at times the band seems a bit all over the place, when it all clicks things are quite enjoyable. Some really groovy & heavy moments for sure, and easy to recommend if you like your stoner metal with some twists.
