Barbarian: Cult of the Empty Grave

The third release from Italy's Barbarian is heavy, dark, and playful. The band doesn't wear humor on its sleeve, but there's obviously a tongue in cheek quality on a track like "Absolute Metal"—especially its opening exclamation. Silly as it seems, the band forges ahead without looking back. This is playful stuff, but it's done as straight as possible. Check out the power of a track like "Cult of the Empty Grave," easily one of the best. "Remorseless Fury" is another good one. Listeners will come to this band with thoughts of early Running wild and even some Manowar (without the loincloths). There's also some hint of Venom on this one. Less a throwback than a love letter, this is heavy music for those who remember the early years. Even better—it's only $6.66 on Bandcamp.
