Tremonti: Dust

It's hooks overload on the third Tremonti rock/metal album that is Dust which quickly follows last year's Cauterize. Not an album that I'd usually seek out but curiosity got ther better of me, and I found it to be so much more appealing than I had anticipated. It was actually during the recording sessions for Cauterize with guitarist/vocalist Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge/Creed) leading the way that the band laid down so much fresh material that it was decided to not just release one but two albums. So the songs were split up accordingly to get an appropriate balance and now we have that second release which style wise is similar to the first. There's no shortage of Mark Tremonti's engaging guitar work and his vocals are so impressive again easily adapting as required, not to mention that input of guitarist Eric Friedman, Wolfgang Van Halen on the bass and then there is drummer Garrett Whitlock who sounds fantastic.

Cauterize has those addictive tracks starting with the explosive "Radical Change", and there is that and more on Dust as it gets going in similar fashion with "My Last Mistake" and its thrash riffage and monstrous chorus. It's certainly not the case that Dust was to be the designated lightweight of the two releases as this is another powerful melodic album, which becomes quickly apparent as the first three lively tracks hit hard leading to the excellent title number "Dust". The band slows it down for "Dust" a great rocker with such a powerful memorable chorus and there's no shortage of those on Dust to have you singing along. I guess you could say that I'm hooked on Dust the production is top notch and this is one album that continues to impress.

Tremonti: Dust

My Score:

Guitarist Mark Tremonti certainly keeps busy enough these days, not only with his main band Alter Bridge but also his band Tremonti, the latter of which also more than deserves your attention and in no way takes a backseat musically to the guitarists main bread winner. Here, he's once again at the forefront as lead vocalist and co-axe slinger alongside Eric Friedman, with Van Halen bassist Wolfgang Van Halen and drummer Garrett Whitlock rounding out this potent line-up. Seeing as Mark is one of the main songwriters for Alter Bridge, those wonderful melodic hooks are ever present here on Dust, though musically things are a tad heavier with the Tremonti band at times. Vocally speaking, Mark is a strong singer, making him the total package as the world already knows of his guitar prowess, and he shines on the ballad "Dust" but also the heavier, almost thrash styled tracks "My Last Mistake", "The Cage", "Betray Me", and "Rising Storm".

With a new Alter Bridge album here in 2016 and this barnburner from earlier in the year, it's a good time to be a fan of Mark Tremonti. Dig in deep folks.
