Mistur: In Memoriam

Mistur made quite an impact with their debut Attende back in 2009, but it's been somewhat quiet on the Norwegian front for many years for this epic black metal juggernaut, until now that is, with the release of In Memoriam for Dark Essence Records. Some changes have happened within the band in recent years, as new vocalist Olver Oien and drummer Tomas Myklebust have joined the ranks, but Mistur have by no means lost a step. In Memoriam contains all the black metal fury that characterized the debut, with an added element of prog sophistication permeating the arrangements, making for a truly epic feel. This is no more realized than on the excellent "Distant Peaks", one of the best tunes in the black metal genre you are going to hear this year, complete with venomous vocal snarls, furious, jagged riffs & blastbeats, Deep Purple inspired Hammond organ, and orchestral synths. It doesn't get much better than this folks. Elsewhere, be on the lookout for the savage "Firstborn Son", the raging prog/black/power metal vibe of "Matriarch's Lament", the lengthy "The Sight", which features some thrilling dueling clean/harsh vocals, and the majestic closer "Tears of Remembrance", another great blending of progressive rock keyboards, tasty lead guitar, booming riffs, and frantic rhythms.

If your love of black metal leans towards the progressive, symphonic, epic, and adventurous spectrum, you HAVE to check out In Memoriam...it's that simple folks. This is a seriously good album, and a welcome return from a truly talented band that are firing on all cylinders.
