Strange band name and album title, but damn if Corduroy from Texas rockers Honky isn't a hell of a lot of fun, bringing to mind vintage ZZ Top, a touch of Pantera, Down, & Black Label Society, plus no shortage of Southern rockers past and present. Hard to believe this is the bands eighth release, with songs like "Outta Season", "Baby Down Slow Down", and the title track so full of addictive grooves, raunchy guitar work, occasional horns, strong lead & backing vocals, and just a warm vibe, that it's hard to imagine these guys falling as far under the radar as they have. With their long beards and cowboy hats, their image does scream 'ZZ Top tribute act', but the bands music doesn't quite go full bore down that path. You can certainly hear a bit of Pat Travers attitude in spots, as on the scorching guitar workout "Ain't Got the Time", the blues rock workout "Double Fine", and certainly the cover of the Travers classic "Snortin' Whiskey". For some swampy country ala David Allan Coe or Willie Nelson, look no further than "I Don't Care", a tune littered with acoustic & slide guitars that shows another side to the band.
For a good ol' slice of Texas styled rock 'n' roll, you can't go wrong with Corduroy. Hopefully this album will open some doors for Honky, a very fine band who deserve to be heard by a wider audience. Available on Philip Anselmo's Housecore Records.
