Deathless Legacy: The Gathering

Several bands are trying to get the label "horror metal" to stick to them more than it does to others. Not long ago, Cadaveria put that title on an album, hoping it would gather some momentum around their own interests in horror themes and heavy metal. Deathless Legacy is also hoping to get some mileage out of that label, but they are definitely doing so from the theatrical side of things rather than the darkly psychological side. The music on this album channels a blend of horror movies and horror themes, most of which are easily recognized but playful. The band is very talented and there are some solid guitar solos and creative vocal passages. I really enjoyed Alessio Lucatti's (Vision Divine) keyboards.

It's not surprising Deathless Legacy has opened for Rob Zombie; the music is well played and theatrical and could certainly appeal to fans of that broad style. I liked the album, but I found it repetitive in places and perhaps even too long. Some listeners will certainly stumble over the track "Circus of the Freaks" with its repeated line "Gabba Gabba Gabba Gabba." I think I understand the connection between this song and the famous movie Freaks, but the gobble noises are only slightly better than James Hetfield's infamous "tick tick tick tick." Deathless Legacy is a talented up-and-coming band, one that should find eager listeners even though the style doesn't appeal to me as much as it might have.
