Livarkahil: Signs Of Decay

I'm often confused by death metal bands who decide to pour hours worth of time into creating a concept for their albums, which the band's singer then proceeds to go and growl in a manner that makes the story, or message completely inaudible. I'm not adverse to growled vocals, and my music collection has more than its fair share of concept albums (more than is fashionable certainly!). Therefore when I read in Livarkahil's press release that they have concocted an album based in religious autocracy, I have to say that my interest was piqued - until that is, I realised that I can only actually pick out every third or fourth word screamed. That may be an unfair assessment of an impressive lyric based album, but to be honest I wouldn't know. What I do know is that Livarkahil fire out pretty standard, if undoubtedly convincing black metal, that smacks home with a degree of power, although not a huge amount of originality. The blast beats hammer with menace and intent, the slabs of guitar are incessant and insistent and the vocals are actually pretty damn convincing. However there isn't a huge amount that really sets this band out from the copious others also working within this framework. If death metal is where your heart resides, then Livarkahil will be a more than worthy addition to your playlist, although don't expect them to be a revelation. Now....where's that damn lyric sheet…….?
