Peters, Surya Kris: The Hermit

Here's another artist completely new to me. Surya Kris Peters, a member of the psychedelic Samsara Blues Experiment, has released a new solo album titled The Hermit. The German artist had previously released Status Flux (August, 2015) and Moonstruck (January, 2016) on digital format. The Hermit combines both albums and has been given a proper physical release on LP.

Peters' influences clearly originate from the '70s with such artists as Popol Vuh, Klaus Schulze and Mike Oldfield being the main culprits. The music is quite introspective and hypnotic with Peters' droning synths and Rhodes filling out the brooding electronic soundscapes. If there is such a thing as chill out music this is it.

Beginning with the ambient electronics of "Eremitage", the music builds subtly at times with different layers of electronics and synth drones resonating throughout the piece. On "Ragamati" the feel is more mystical with Eastern flavoured synths and electronic beats. Faint electric piano can be heard in the far off distance adding another ethereal element to the artist's electronic meanderings. The '70s is very much the theme in "Winterbottom" where electric piano and organ take over the soundscape. The organ is especially prominent here. The calming "Snow Feather" is a gentler piece with the droning wall of sound providing a solid backdrop for Peters' delicate piano motifs. With "Chandra Luna" the Eastern tinged electronics and percussion build in successive waves throughout the songs nine minute running time. The minimal vocals add some variety and the synths are incredibly spacey adding an otherworldly element.

The Hermit will be a good fit for fans of the previously mentioned artists and anyone who appreciates electronic and ambient styles. Released on Electric Magic Records.
