iamthemorning: Lighthouse

Formed in 2010 in St. Petersburg, Russia, iamthemorning features pianist Gleb Kolyadin alongside the ethereal vocals of Marjana Semkina. The band self-released their debut album in 2012 before signing to Kscope and releasing their self-titled debut record for the label in September 2014. This was an album which I greatly enjoyed giving it a big four stars describing it as, "quirky yet mournful."

Lighthouse continues in a similarly successful vein. Recorded across London, Moscow and St. Petersburg, the core instrument of the band, the grand piano, was recorded in Mosfilm Studios Moscow, the largest and oldest studios in Russia. Founded in 1920, Mosfilm is renowned for recording orchestras for soundtracks for the most famous Soviet-era films, including works by Tarkovsky and Eisenstein. If you're familiar with the sometimes grandiose works of those cinematic pioneers you'll be aware of the huge scope of their oeuvre and iamthemorning have a similar sweeping aesthetic running through their work. "Libretto Horror" is all gothic melodrama ("Help me, I can't breathe, won't you stay here with me?"/" "I feel so small, now you can't escape.") Gleb Kolyadin weaves his keyboard/piano lines all over the album making this another satisfying, enigmatic listen.
