Wormed: Krighsu
Bands like Wormed remind me of a wind-up toy just about to be set loose. Unlike a toy, however, this band never shows signs of losing energy. From start to finish, this album overwhelms listeners with brutal sound, impressive technique, and interesting ideas. Sure, there are interludes where the music stops and sound effects take over, but those are less common than the onslaught of technical death metal. I'm not sure exactly when bands like this began taking off but science fiction technical death metal seems like a fixed category at this point. The most impressive thing about Wormed and bands like them is the sheer talent of the musicians. Just listen to most of the tracks on this album and you'll hear blistering drums and guitars, played in ways that are fast, crazed, and downright impossible. The vocals, though impressive for different reasons, are deep and raspy; sometimes they even sound otherworldly.
This album has a concept that may be familiar to some listeners. I confess that I didn't try to follow it this time around. I wanted to listen to the album two or three times and just get a feel for the sound and the style. Having done that, I have to say that I liked what I heard even though this isn't my preferred subgenre of metal. I really liked "The Singularitiarism" and "Computronium Pulsar Nanarchy."
