Inverloch: Distance / Collapsed

According to the band's Facebook page, Inverloch is made up of four guys: Ben, Matt, Mark, and Paul. I admire the lack of fanfare, but I think most people know that two of these guys (Matt Skarajew and Paul Mazziotta) were previously members of Disembowelment, the legendary Australian death metal band. If you haven't caught up to Disembowelment yet, be sure to do so! The band's output was small, but what we do have is terrific.

Many fans first heard Inverloch in 2012, when the band issued an EP. This release, the band's first full-length, builds on the strength of the EP and gives us much more to chew on—not to mention the tracks are pretty long. I've listened to the album almost five times now and I like it more and more with each listen. I'm not suggesting its one of those releases that is only good with time, but I do think that the opening track "Distance Collapsed (In Rubble)" was a bit of a took some getting used to. Don't get me wrong; the band sounds great and I liked the aggressive edge of the song. It's just that this band is so good with the darker, moodier, stuff that I wanted more of that. That's a strange thing to gripe about, but what can I say? These guys play the melancholic death metal as good as any.

The production on the album is clean and the sound is crisp and dark. Some listeners will prefer the rougher sound of Disembowelment, but I liked the sound on this one. I think Inverloch has a bright future and I look forward to more from them. Check out "The Empyrean Torment," a track I'll have on my personal playlist for most of the summer, I'm sure.
