Spiliotopoulos, Tassos: In The North

Tassos Spiliotopoulos, originally from Athens, Greece, has made a name for himself in the London jazz scene having released three albums thus far, his latest titled In The North. In 2013 he moved to Stockholm where he recorded his latest release. On the album Spiliotopoulos is joined by Örjan Hultén (saxophone), Palle Sollinger (bass) and Fredrik Rundqvist (drums).

In The North is an excellent contemporary jazz album that showcases each member of the ensemble without focusing on excessive showboating. Of course there are some excellent solos scattered throughout and Spiliotopoulos proves to be an excellent guitarist as he morphs between differing styles and tones with ease. On the pretty album opener "Waterfall" gentle guitar notes cascade like flowing water as delicate cymbals and warm saxophone breathes like fresh air over the soundscape. Each instrument is vital here with all the players getting in on the action. With "Emerald Blues" the guitar carries an American feel and the song takes its time as it leads into bluesier territory. "By Way Of Fire" is another excellent track featuring stellar guitar, bass and drums as each follows the other in an exhilarating display of musicianship. On "Friday Frolics" the intro of sax and drums has a big band sound before the guitar and bass take over with some exhilarating lines. The pace is much more languid and smooth in "Downfall Monologue" with the moody guitar giving an almost three dimensional depth. Guitar and bass solos share the spotlight.

Spiliotopoulos' command of the guitar is truly exceptional. In The North should certainly appeal to fans of jazz and fusion as well as those who appreciate great guitar work. Released on Anelia Records.
