Lovecraft, H. P.: Hallowe'en in a Suburb and Others

Cadabra Records is kind to keep H. P. Lovecraft's stories and poetry close to our ears. First there was The Hound and The Music of Erich Zann released in February and now we've got this one, a 7" collection of some of Lovecraft's more memorable poetry. Soon, the label will release The Lurking Fear and, later, Pickman's Model. Metal fans will be glad to know that Theologian, the dark ambient / industrial act out of New York will serve as the label's in-house sound makers. It's exciting to see yet another layer of enthusiasm for Lovecraft take shape.

This recording of Lovecraft's poetry is read by Andrew Leman. He reads the poems clearly and effectively. Lovecraft wrote tons of poetry, work that is sometimes overlooked by his readers. Not all his poetry is equally good, but much of it blends charm, wit, and terror in successful ways. I've always enjoyed "Hallowe'en in a Suburb" for its delightful invocation of Halloweens of long ago. "The Cat," another good one, hints at Lovecraft's enduring love for cats even though it takes on an uncanny twist. All the tracks on this album are good and listeners can find much to delight and entertain. As you listen, find ways of connecting Lovecraft's rhyme and meter to Poe's poetry. Lovecraft greatly admired Poe and some of that influence is evident here. I had a blast listening to this release and I anxiously look forward to more spoken word terror from Cadabra Records.
