AntropomorphiA: Necromantic Love Songs

New from Metal Blade Records is this re-issued and re-mastered version of AntropomorphiA's earliest releases. Although the band is officially back in business, most metal fans will remember the power of these tracks from the early 90s. Long heralded as cult classics, these recordings can now find their way into the hands of even more eager listeners. This is a limited release, with only 666 LPs and 1000 CDs in circulation. I'm not sure about electronic versions. Playing metal in the style of Death, Venom, Autopsy, Possessed, and others, AntropomorphiA demonstrates that the 90s included music far better than the ubiquitous offerings of lame nu-Metal bands.

The music on these early recordings is straightforward and heavy death metal. The vocals are dark and raspy, delivering nightmarish lines barely hinted at by the titles. AntropomorphiA pushed the boundaries lyrically but did so without too much fanfare. The best thing about this band is just that—the band's ability to deliver strong music at slow and patient tempos that were always crushing. Unlike other extreme bands that tried too hard to be different, this band just kept at it, delivering crushing and powerful music that always felt honest. The recordings sound terrific in their re-mastered state. Even though I love the band's vocals and guitars, I was especially impressed with the strong performances on the bass and drums on this one. Call it old school if you want, but this is a solid new release that deserves another listen.
