Sanchez, Miguel: Thalisma

Spain's Miguel Sanchez not only sounds a bit like a New-Age version of Santana, but he also acts like a contemporary Carlos - inviting no fewer than 21 musicians to get their groove on with him for Thalisma. Unlike Santana's recent albums, though, there's not a superstar in the bunch. Rather, Sanchez draws upon his knowledge of music and musicians from different origins to create an international album that blends the traditional and the contemporary - including Spanish, Senegalese, Indian, Italian, French, Belgian and Algerian sounds. That diversity should come as no surprise, considering that Sanchez was born in Spain, raised in Belgium and now lives in Paris. While much of Thalisma is instrumental, the few vocals are sung in foreign tongues. But it is really Sanchez's Flamenco guitar that makes these 10 songs sing. This is worldly and romantic stuff, with a touch of prog and a dash of class.
