The interestingly-named (none of the band is Jewish apparently) Talmud Beach is a blues trio from the heartlands of Finland. Their second album Chief is released in March 2016 and helpfully the press release reviews the album for me so here goes; "Chinaman Blues swamps; Forest" is redolent and dark; Mountain Man is left in the white haze of the mountain top, and in the end a chief's hat awaits you in all the colours of the rainbow." Eh? Sod that, let's have a listen with our own ears shall we?
I see a lot of JJ Cale in Talmud Beach especially in the laid back "Ain't So Young" which totally echoes the horizontal Oklahoma man. This is without question a good thing although as with Cale I often wonder if things could be stretched out a little with the addition of more guitar but on the flip side Talmud Beach say what they want to say in concise fashion although the title track is over nine minutes long. A prime example is the less than three minutes "Born with the Blues" in which only the chorus is in English so it's somewhat difficult to work out exactly how blues-ridden the band is! This is an early hours of the morning type relaxing album that is worth your time.
