Sharky Shark: Super Awesome Mega Rock

No, not a J-Rock slap of quirkism, Sharky Shark are actually a kid's metal project by two members of Scottish power metal outfit Ascension. So who the hell is Sharky Shark and why does he want Super Awesome Mega Rock? Well, unsurprisingly he's a shark and this album follows him through life under the sea as he encounters his chums and discovers all the moralistic lessons that only kid's characters can. However to be fair to Sharky, his lessons are slightly less stereotypical than might be expected, such as not eating his jelly fish friends, because, well, they're not made of the jelly that tastes good with ice cream.

Hence you get the idea, this is metal for kids and while you couldn't really call it strictly power metal, the ethos comes from that area. Still, there's no denying that the likes of "Jake The Jellyfish", "Frankenshark" and "Sharky Life Forever" are good fun and catchy as anything you'll hear. Personally I don't have any kids in my house of the target age anymore, however I'd be a liar if I didn't admit that myself and my teenage daughters (and their friends) weren't chuckling along with the lyrics and bopping (in a most unseemly fashion) along to the beat.

In all honesty it's not easy to see where this is really aimed. Yes, parents into metal music may well play this to the kiddy-winks as way of introduction to the music they love and as a live act – depending on the setting – families may well find Sharky Shark good entertainment. However, how much play-time Super Awesome Mega Rock will really gain, isn't such a given. However if you're really looking for a truly kiddie friendly metal album, then this may well be it.

And always remember, Jake The Jellyfish may by made of jelly, but eating your friends is never particularly advisable...
