Lion's Daughter, The: Existence is Horror

This is a bleak album, a series of dark and frightening reflections on a world gone wrong. Tracks like "Nothing Lies Ahead" bring to mind the post-apocalyptic nightmares we can imagine so easily (especially during election years!). "They're Already Inside," a great horror-movie line, operates at the level of knowing that all preparations are futile, that the horrors we feared are closer than we ever imagined. "The Fiction in the Dark," my favorite track, is similarly bleak and hopeless. So is "Dog Shaped Man," surely a creature you'd never want to meet.

The Lion's Daughter is probably best described as a doom act, but it's more thematic doom than the Sabbath-inspired riffage we expect from traditional doom. The band likes doom to be sure, but there's also a healthy dose of hardcore and despair to round things out. The vocals are especially intense; they sound ripped from the throat, as though performing them is painful. The backing music is intense and frantic and heavy. For fans of crushing music, unrelenting and merciless, this album is a dream come true. The band's Facebook page describes its genre as "unpleasant." That's a good word, but it's unpleasant in the way extreme metal should be. You'll know if this is for you after a few minutes. . I liked it well enough, but by the time I got to the closing track, "The Horror of Existence," I was pummeled enough.
