Coulson, Sam: Electric Classical

Sam Coulson is a young guitar phenom who joined Asia in 2013 after Steve Howe left the band to continue his pursuits with Yes. If you have seen the guitarist on YouTube or have heard him live there is no doubting his excellent playing and he can shred with the best of them. On his debut album Electric Classical, Coulson has decided to give ten classical tunes from the likes of Bach, Beethoven, Sor and a few others the guitar treatment albeit done in a tranquil and serene way. This just goes to show what a versatile guitarist he is. The beautiful arpeggios of "Ave Maria" begin the disc in fine fashion. Coulson also adds full bodied chords giving the tune a full bodied arrangement. Clean and crisp picking highlight "BWV 1007 Prelude" whereas cool synth effects add a majestic quality to Tarrega's "Recuerdos De La Alhambra". For a more reflective experience and somewhat somber sound, "Vals Venezolano No. 2" and "Op. 6 No. 11" should work rather well. The cool synth effects on "Moonlight Sonata Blues" are very cool and it is here where Coulson's guitar has a more 'rock' influence with some biting lead work and heavier chords.

Electric Classical is a refreshing statement from an artist who has matured beyond his years. Fans of classical music and instrumental guitar will want to check this out. For me, the only drawback is its short running time of twenty-five minutes. Still, Electric Classical does enough in a short amount of time to earn my recommendation.
