Outre Mesure: La Ligne Perdue

Outre Mesure is a jazz rock/fusion quintet hailing from France. The group formed in 2009 and released their debut Abacadaë in 2009 and have recently come out with their sophomore album La Ligne Perdue in 2015.

In the band are Marc Dosiere (trumpet, bugle), Jérôme Roselé (tenor saxophone, flute), Jean-Louis Morais (guitar, composer), Olivier Verhaeghe (bass) and Charles Duytschaever (drums).

If you are looking for an easy album 'to get' you are reading the wrong review. This is complex music, sometimes incredibly chaotic, as the band's improvisational nature comes through often. On the album you get mostly eclectic fusion and there is a clear influence of Frank Zappy and Henry Cow at work here. Songs like the album opening "Mingas" with its gentle guitar notes turning into biting lead work and the eclectic "La Promenade De Cléobule" where a mellow start turns abruptly into a cacophony of sounds with the wind instruments taking the lead is what's in store. The drum and bass groove in "Goulash Électrique" is another highlight where the band gets its jam on and heavier riffs come into play. The drum solo is excellent.

For the more adventurous listener La Ligne Perdue should satisfy that experimental itch when smooth jazz just isn't enough.
