Lusus Naturae, which means 'Freak Of Nature', is the debut album from Fresno, California doom/stoner act Beastmaker, who have found for themselves a great home over on Rise Above Records. Like their cross-state rivals Orchid, these guys worship all things Black Sabbath, as well as Pentagram, Witchfinder General, and Saint Vitus, so if you love slow, thunderous guitar riffs, you've come to the right place.
Comprised of band leader Trevor William Church on guitar & vocals, Andres Alejandro Saldate (aka Juan Bonham) on drums, and bassist John Tucker, this trio have created a potent stew of doom here on Lusus Naturae, a dozen tracks of killer riffs and seriously heavy grooves. Many of the songs here seem to be paying tribute to a host of horror films, which will be a real treat for doom fans who also love the horror genre. Lumbering, irresistible riffs permeate bruisers such as "Skin Crawler", "Clouds in the Sky", and "Arachne", while the psychedelic side to the band comes out on the creepy, melancholy "Find the Stranger". Church & Tucker complement each other perfectly, as Trevor's deliciously evil riffs combat John's booming, canon firing fuzz bass at ever juncture, delivering a massive wall of sound on future classics like "You Must Sin", "Burnt Offering", "Mask of Satan", and the wonderfully plodding "It" . And, how about the killer title track, or crushing closer "The Strain", each one coming across like a long lost track from Sabbath's Master of Reality album, right down to Church's straining Ozzy styled vocals. Awesome stuff.
Yep, in case you haven't guessed it by now folks, we have here an early pick for doom release of 2016, an album so packed with memorable, fuzzed out riffs and powerful grooves that you won't be able to get the overall vibe out of your head.
