Like a long lost batch of leftover tracks from the Vol. 4 sessions by Black Sabbath comes the sophomore release from stoner/doom act Goatess, titled Purgatory Under New Management. Once again led by former Saint Vitus/Count Raven vocalist Chritus Linderson, the band here have churned out 8 tracks of fuzzed out riffs, stoned out atmosphere, and trippy psychedelia. Most of the tunes are pretty lengthy and allow for the monstrous riffage to meander, pummel, and crush, as evident on the epic "Moth to Flame", "Murphy Was an Optimist" , "Silent War", and the lumbering title track, with Linderson's Ozzy influenced vocals darting in and out of the wall of sound. "Crocodilians and Other Creepy Crawling Shhh... " sounds like a midnight jam between Sabbath and Hawkwind, while the boatload of groove mixed with delicious riffs adds another element to the upbeat "Shadowland". The band's willingness to venture into both prog & psych territory shows up on the moody "Wrath of God", another lengthy track that sees the band crush as well as explore new worlds of spacey experimentation, and the band close out the show on the doom laden dirge that is "Good Moaning", another tune with a massive brontosaurus riff and crashing rhythms.
If you love the almighty riff, plenty of plodding grooves, a smattering of prog & psych, and mysterious vocals, then Purgatory Under New Management is an album that you will need to make sure you investigate as soon as it is released on Svart Records in the coming weeks. Easily a contender for doom/stoner album of the year!
