Abhorrent: Intransigence

Bands like Abhorrent are perfect for those times you absolutely have to annoy someone. Don't get me wrong, I like the band well enough, but this is the kind of stuff that will get the neighbors to call the police. The song title "The Elegance of Asymmetry" captures something of Abhorrent's essence. The music is heavy and dark, but laced not only with melodic moments but also with a very frantic bass. The vocals are extremely heavy, the kind that takes the infamous death growl to a whole new level. It's as if a pit of hell opened up and spewed something awful from the depths. For metal fans, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Even though this is a debut release, the band includes members of Spawn of Possession, The Faceless, and Absurdist. The album also features guests such as Trevor Strnad (Black Dahlia Murder), Malcolm Pugh (Inferi), Matthew Chalk (Mephistopheles), and Antonio Ascencio (Serocs). The best track is probably "Ifrit," mostly because of Pugh's blistering guitar solo, but also because it shows off the band's occasional penchant for melody and for sheer heaviness.

Some listeners will find this album less accessible than others, especially if this is their first foray into this particular style. Yes, metal like this is more extreme than some of the heaviest bands out there, but there's a good place for this kind of energy, power, and intensity. I'm not sure what the future holds for Abhorrent, but fans of the crazy stuff will want to check this one out.
